About Sherry Tipton

In Sherry Tipton`s sculpture, line is everything. By this I mean the profile the form creates when viewed from the combination of any point on the compass and any elevation. As a viewer moves around the sculpture, the line constantly changes and must work with the overall composition and meaning.

Biography / CV of Sherry Tipton

At first glance the similarities between being a classical musician and a stone sculptor might not be obvious. But consider the discipline of mastering technique- the many hours spent repeating scales, arpeggios or etudes, and that of learning to hold a chisel at the correct angle. Both involve a great deal of highly focused learning to create sublime works of art.

Primarily a classical pianist and bassoonist for most of her life, Sherry Tipton has also enjoyed a successful career in pastel portraiture and figure drawing. Foremost in her work is the expression of universal feelings and emotions to which we can all relate and which are most beautifully expressed in the figure.

Sherry Tipton began carving stone in 2004 at Ghost Ranch in northern New Mexico and soon began restructuring her life to embrace stone sculpture full time. Since then, stone carving has become her main focus.

In 2009, Sherry Tipton began exhibiting her stone sculpture in shows and galleries in Colorado, New Mexico, and New York City. She also received her first commission at this time.

Artist Statement of Sherry Tipton

In my sculpture, line is everything. By this I mean the profile the form creates when viewed from the combination of any point on the compass and any elevation. As a viewer moves around the sculpture, the line constantly changes and must work with the overall composition and meaning. The line has energy from it`s context in the figure. For example, in my sculpture " Torso " the side profile forms a strong "S" line that speaks to the strength and unwinding energy of the female figure. That one line expresses the core meaning of the sculpture.
Then, within the framework of the line, I carve the subtle forms and many fine details that make the sculpture personal, that make it my work. I do not generalize the human form but take the time to continue this concept of line deep into the sculpture. So there is a concert of lines, from the outer, most general to the inner, most fine. This is how I reflect and celebrate the human figure.

In this high-speed, instant-gratification world it`s hard to think of a more anachronistic art form than stonecarving. People ask me why I do it. The answer is simple, I do this out of love. Love for the material, the process and the human form.

"The problem of contemporary sculpture and the garden is one which has rankled in my mind for years. It is usually resolved through a process of inversion-that is turning it into sculpture in the garden as against garden sculpture. By that I mean the sculptor takes over the garden as an open exhibition gallery, of which the focus is their creation, to which the world of nature merely provides the frame. The Idea that sculpture is a contributory element to an overall'mise en scene',in which, sometimes its role may be incedental rather than central, has been lost.In this we have seen the betrayall of the great tradition of garden sculpture, one which was unashamed at being decorative or delightful."
